The Workhorse Returns
The Wilier Izoard falls squarely between Wilier's bargain full carbon frameset, the Mortirolo, and Wilier's supreme engineering feat and racing throroughbred, the Cento. Wilier restores the glorious name Izoard in 2008 in commemoration of one of Wilier's most visible and successful racing frames: the Izoard was a faithful workhorse for teams as diverse as Gerolsteiner, Liquigas, Lampre, and Cofidis in its heyday, and here at Cadence we have a number of pictures of riders perced atop an Izoard including greats like Rebellin, Casagrande and Totschnig.
The Izoard name was retired from racing when Wilier moved away from sponsorship of Gerolsteiner in 2005 and picked up the two pro teams Cofidis and Lampre. During that time Wilier invested heavily in the research and production of what was then the lightest and stiffest racing frame ever tested, the Wilier Le Roi. For their top riders Wilier supplied these two teams with Le Rois, while the domestiques received full scandium versions of the Mortirolo--another race proven all-rounder that won more races than many other bike brands combined.
For 2008 the Izoard returns with a vengeance. The new all-carbon Izoard takes design cues from its sibling, the Cento. Elegantly swooping top tube and chain stays make the Izoard another Italian masterpiece to take your breath away. A full blown racing machine the Izoard is also equally comfortable on long weekend strolls. Thanks to its swooping lines--which are more than design flourishes--the Izoard provides a fantastic vibration absorption experience sure to make you want to ride another hour or so before turning back home.
Manufactured to Wilier's exacting standards, the monocoque carbon frame comes in 6 sizes, XS through XXL, and is nicely finished with 6K carbon weave. As always with Wiliers, the paint quality and workmanship are second to none. Superbly hand laid carbon and meticulously hand painted frames are hallmarks of all great Wiliers, and the Izoard does not disappoint.
We'd recommend the Izoard for anyone interested in spirited riding or even racing. Lighter and smaller riders will appreciate the Izoard's subtle manners and springy rear triangle, while larger, more powerful riders will appreciate the Izoard's sure-footedness and crisp acceleration. One thing everyone will agree on is the Izoard's extremely reasonable price.
Starting in the spring of 2008 Cadence will have a demo fleet of Izoards for week-long test rides. To reserve your Izoard, please call Cadence NY at 212-226-4400 or Cadence Philadelphia at 215-508-4300.
