808

Incredible Versatility

In 2005 Zipp introduced the 808, and in just a couple of years this wheelset has become notorious. Unleashed by teams CSC and Phonak in the Tour de France, and used by Tyler Hamilton and Bobby Julich in the 2005 Olympic Summer Games, the 808 is seconds faster over a 40km level run than most every other non-disc wheelset. This is one devastating triathlon or time trial weapon, and is currently the most aerodynamic deep dish wheelset produced. Its partially oval rim cross-section and Zipp-exclusive dimpled surface technology make it nearly invisible to the wind. And, its ultra-thin Sapim spokes (1mm wide!) smooth rather than churn the air so turbulence is kept to an incredible minimum.

Perhaps the greatest advantage provided by the 808 wheelset is its incredible versatility. The 808s can be used for time trials and triathlons, but also in road races. And, on those days when the winds in Hawaii (or on your local "World Championship" TT course) are just a little too strong to handle a disc, the 808 is a phenomenal alternative. If you have a budget which allows for just one set of supremely aero wheels, you shouldn't pass up the 808s.
