Mike Hebe
Cyclist Extraordinaire!
Cadence’s July 2008 Athlete of the Month is a person whose name is likely familiar to many competitive cyclists in the region as he’s been a part of the endurance athlete scene in the mid-Atlantic region for quite a long time and currently races for the visitPA.com mountain bike team. He is also highly involved in the organizational side of cycling in the region having promoted the now defunct UCI cyclocross event held in Lower Allen and Carlisle, PA throughout its run and is currently giving back to the sport by being the coordinator and promoter for both the MAC and PA ‘Cross series.
Mike Hebe, “The Legend” as he’s come to be affectionately known, has competed at a high level in triathlon, road cycling, cyclocross, and mountain bike racing throughout his various lives in sport (and even spent time as a competitive body builder!). It is his recent focus on mountain biking that brought Mike to Cadence and that began his work with Cadence’s mountain bike specialist, coach Mike Kuhn.
Mike’s choice as athlete of the month is a result of the hard work he’s put into his training, his attention to detail in the workouts, and the resulting success he’s had including two recent results at the US National Mountain Bike Championships in Mount Snow, VT. Mike started the weekend with a podium finish in the Expert 40-44 XC championship and then capped the weekend with a stars and stripes jersey in the SuperD. Mike is also chasing the season long endurance mountain bike champions in the Mid-Atlantic Super Series and is currently running second in the series behind visitPA.com team mate Rob Lictenwalner, who also happens to be a Cadence coached athlete.
“Preparing Mike for the Mt Snow Nationals meant focusing on specific aspects of fitness and terrain necessary for success on a climbing intensive course interspersed with some of the most technical terrain in any XC event, but we had to balance this with Mike’s desire to excel in the regional MASS endurance series and tailor his training to meet both goals” said coach Kuhn.
Mike came to Cadence as a result of his years of competitive experience; of knowing the need that a person with sporting goals has of an objective view of one’s training and progression and of the necessity to focus completely on the training rather than taking on the stress and burden of coaching oneself. This is exactly what Cadence provides every athlete. Mike has a deep love for competitive endurance athletics, is a life-long athlete, and a fierce competitor and we’re proud to announce him as the July 2008 Cadence Athlete of the Month.
