Steve says:

My reconnection with cycling started a couple years ago, when I decided to try the American Cancer Society’s ride from Philadelphia to the New Jersey shore.  Riding sixty miles seemed daunting to me at the time.

I needed a new bicycle so I could train for the ride, since my thirty-year-old bicycle was not up to the task.  I went to Cadence to buy a bike, not realizing how much bicycles – and prices – had changed.  Going into Cadence was intimidating at first.  The store looked like a temple to bicycles, with bicycle frames sitting on the walls like deities.

Once I started cycling, I got in touch with my body and came to realize how profoundly out of shape I was.  I attended a month of training classes and was intimidated by the technicalities of setting up a bike on a trainer, setting up and looking at the power meter, and getting through the grueling training.

During the winter of 2006-2007, I started doing Cadence group rides.  The camaraderie was great, but I realized that I had to improve my fitness and performance to keep up with the other riders.  Thus began my real entry into coaching.

Coaching and classes have helped me to improve my physical fitness and my sense of well-being.  My coach, Holden, has provided me with motivation, support, and encouragement.  We tackle my goals as a team, working to improve my fitness and to achieve personal success.

When I started to get serious about cycling, I had to learn a new language – watts, lactate threshold, power zones, etc.  With coaching and classes, my power and performance jumped dramatically, from a lactate threshold of 260 early on to 300 most recently.  Although the increase in my LT has meant increased pain and suffering with my workouts, it also brings the pleasure and satisfaction that come with a sense of accomplishment and progress.  Having a coach is like having the wind at your back on a ride -- a steady push that makes the work easier and less intimidating.

Although the change in my LT and other numbers is great, even better is the added sense of strength, health, and connection with my body as an instrument that I am tuning.  This has also allowed me the pleasure of now climbing hills that used to make me huff, puff, and despair.  Another pleasure gained through coaching and training has been a greater ability to ride with elite and dedicated cyclists during training rides.  Now rides of up to sixty to eighty miles have become routine and enjoyable.

I am looking forward to the spring racing season to see how the coaching and training translates on race day.  I would love to place well and win in every race.  But for me, the journey to get there is even more valuable.

Cadence turned my cycling life around! Although I'm a triathlete at heart, Cadence has taught me not only how to properly handle and ride my bike, but how to compete on it as well. I'm addicted to time trials, and my triathlon times have improved dramatically.

Chris says, "Since training with Cadence, I've lowered my cholesterol from 199 to 171 and I've dropped 3 inches off of my waist. My blood pressure is 110/70. The best thing about Cadence for me has been the structured approach to training, the access to professional caliber testing and of course having a coach to monitor the process.  In the past, I would simply get on my bike and just ride.  Now, I have a program that guides me through each part of the year and has prepared me for my first season of racing.  In addition to the great coaching, Cadence's retail staff provide concierge level service that I've never received anywhere else."
